The Illustrated Directory of Fighting Aircraft of WWII by Salamander Books
(I'm serious!) answers your questions about Alfa Aero engines in fighters
of WWII. The Macchi c. 202 had a 1,175 hp inverted V 12, the Reggiane Re
2001 had the same. It is not well known that the Italian fighter aircraft
were every bit the match for contemporary Allied fighters in speed and
flying characteristics. The Italians favoured fewer guns, but heavier
calibre than the British, using two half inch (12.7 mm actually) MG above
the engine (Me 109 style) and one7.7 mm (roughly the .303in used by the
Hurricane and Spitfire) in each wing.
