If your Alfa stopped smoking after a bottle of Techron, then it was
most likely a gummed up oil ring that was the culprit. Techron is good
stuff, but I never heard that it would rejuvinate hardened seals. If
the oil ring was sticking in its groove, then it's quite likely the
Techron freed it up to do its job again.

Brake squealing is usually due to metal-to-metal contact at the back
of the pad. A VERY thin coating of standard anti-sieze on the back of
the pad should quiet them down. The dust is a function of the compound.
If you don't like the OEM pads, try something else.
