not so great ABS

Hi!
the Antilock Breaking System on my 1991 164L has began to behave badly:
when first driving the car sometimes the ABS warning light is not on,
but the pedal will have way too much travel and there is the feel
of pulsation from the hydraulic unit with no reason,
when the ABS warning light comes on, or if it is on from startup
the brakes perform normally, though i assume that ABS won't operate.
from reading digests i assume that getting the ABS system repaired
can easily result in expenses and headaches that far exceed the
value of having a functioning ABS,
however the fuse shown in the manual, located in the area under the
glove box doesn't seem to exist, and disconnecting the large
cable running to the hydraulic unit doesn't look reasonable
has anyone been able to disconnect their ABS?
TIA (for a long time i thought that that was someones name!)
