Buying a used car in Livermore northern California

Dear all,
	My girlfriend has just moved to Livermore, northern California,
where she'll be for the next two years. Next month I'll be flying out
to visit her, and one of my jobs while I'm there is to help her buy a
fairly cheap used car. I was wondering whether those of you on the digest 
who live in that area could give me some advice on the used car market 
there - where and what to buy, etc. So as not to fill the digest with low 
Alfa content stuff, please reply to me by email if you think you can help.  
I'm not sure whether her buying an Alfa would be a good idea, but if
anyone in the area has one for sale, who knows...
