One fix is to remove the spring on the latch (trunk end).  This means that you have to push the little lever back down whenever you
pop the trunk, but it also seems to largely eliminate cable-breakage.
(Since I did this - at another lister's suggestion several years ago - I've never had to replace the cable; before that, it was an
every-6 -month job.)
