i just wanted to thank the digest and all the freaks who rallied to my cause 
over the past 2 weeks. 
to refresh, my spider had been lurching like a rodeo horse after it would 
heat up... it continued for a month, and then finally died.
upon deep investigation, the consensus from digest readers is either bad 
ignition, or a failed thurmostatic actuator (coupled with work by two shitty 
mechanics).
in any case, i was put in contact with the president of the alfa club who 
lives only a mile away here in chitown. he has me in contact with a COMPETANT 
spica specialist, and we begin work tuesday.
so, this is a fat THANK YOU to everyone who helped.
