Nuvolari's Tipo B

Les Singh is correct, the Tipo B Nuvolari drove in the 1935 German GP was not
the same one the company had started with years before. It was bored out to 3.8
liters and had 305 hp. The MB W-25 had 430, and the AU ype B 375, so the Alfa
was at a disadvantage but not the disadvantage the embellishments of time would
lead one to believe. Misty conditions also equalled things out somewhat. The
Alfa also had a Dubonnet sliding pillar IFS and hydraulic brakes.

Von Brauchitsch knew he had a tire problem, but he was damned if he did (stop
for tire changes) or damned if he didn't (go on and take a chance on a blowout).
He chose the latter, and at the start of his last lap, the tire went. He ground
over the line on the rim in 5th place while Nuvloari drove into legend.

I remember being in Tulsa at the AROC national convention Sunday awards luncheon
on July 28, 1985, 50 years to the day since that drive, and nobody else in the
room was aware of the anniversary or seemed to care.
