The curious chassis number 1485379
In AD7-917 Tom Gosnell writes "I just bought a '71 1750 spider, model number
105.62. The curious thing is the chassis number: 1485379. According to the
Cardisc CD and Joe Benson's Alfa Buyer's guide, chassis numbers for this
model spider end at 1484050. Any ideas about what gives here?"
What gives here is that Joe Benson and CarDisk both got their numbers from
Fusi, who is usually right but not always. D'Amico & Tabucchi put Tom's
1485379 late in the 1970 production, which ran from 1481373 to 1482220 and
from 1485001 to 1485702, which puts Tom's car 323 before the end of 1970.
Spider production, which was at Pininfarina's plant rather than at Alfa's,
occasionally presents numbering anomalies. If d'Amico & Tabucchi are correct
{as with Fusi, often but not always) the last nine 1750 Spiders versione
America had 2000 engines, although they were still type 105.62 cars rather
than type 115.02 which was the 2000 Spider USA. If you want rigorous logic,
look elsewhere.
Enjoy,
John H.
