116 reverse gear prob

Calling all transaxle gurus...
I'm having a bit of a problem that has me stumped. I recently
replaced the transaxle in my '78 Alfetta GT with a good used one out of a
friend's parts car. The removal and installation went fairly smoothly,
though it took me forever. I finally got it all put back together and went
for a test drive; all forward gears worked beautifully, but it would pop
out of reverse as soon as I tried to let the clutch out :(
I thought it must be the linkage that was at fault. When in reverse
the shifter lever would touch the center console, so I assumed that it must
not be allowing it to fully engage reverse gear. I adjusted the shifter
lever mounting plate a little farther forward (actually as far as it will
go), but the problem persists. I disconnected the linkage where it attaches
to the arm that leads into the transaxle, moved the arm so that the tranny
was in reverse and started the car. No luck, it still pops out of gear
immediately.
Anyone have any idea what might be wrong? As I said before all
forward gears work fine, its just reverse thats bad. If I try to hold it in
gear it just grinds.
