Milano first gear syncro assy question

I'm wondering what the purpose of the small spring is inside of the first
gear syncro on my Verde?  After studying the action, I can't see why it
isn't the standard strap found on say, any other gear.  Any ideas?  Also,
the gears machine up very nicely on the lathe... Tomorrow we shall see how
they drill, probably just as easy.
