I believe that the rubber piece is part of the windage baffle of the upper 
oil pan. When looking through a gasket set my son questioned its purpose. 
Later, upon disassembly we found the corresponding old piece in the upper oil 
pan. I have no idea whether this was an afterthought addition or 
manufacturing shortcut.
