1750 Center Console

On the 1750 GTV, the center console has flanges on the right and left side
as you look at it from the driver's seat that mate to the console to the
dash.  The dash has a cutout of about 3" back and 5" across where the
console sits, and on either side of this notch there are indentations
leading me to think the console flanges sit here.  However, when I mount the
console flanges beneath the dash, there's a gap where the wood veneer ends
to the dash.  I've mounted the console flanges on the top of the dash notch,
but if I remember correctly, the shift lever was restricted.  Does anyone
with a 1750 GTV know how this console mounts?  Thanks in advance.
