Brake troubles

I'm driving my '92 164S today and I'm hitting every light red.  It was
pretty hot out and over about a period of three stoplights I had lost my
brakes.  At each light I had to push the pedal down further to get it to
get the brakes to engage.  I ended up getting home by downshifting and
using the e brake.  I pumped the pedal once I got home and it wouldn't
stiffen up.  About 45 minutes latter I tried it again and it was holding
pressure.  I decided to move the car to see if they were infact working and
sure enough I was able to lock 'em up.  I didn't see any drips anywhere,
and never having a brake problem before I'm not sure what would make it do
this.  Please clue me in if there is an obvious answer.  Thanks in advance.
