HELP! 164 auto shift is stuck!

Suddenly, yesterday, I could not shift my 1995LS automatic out of park!
It was as if the engine hadn't been turned on - just would not budge.
So I finally forced it against better judgement because I had to get the
car home.

With enough force, it finally did clunk into drive.  Shifting to
reverse, 1st, or other gears is no problem.  But getting out of park
requires alot of force.   What could be the problem, and how serious?
Should I take it to my mechanic immediately, or is it okay to drive for
a few more days?
