Re: Chip, 164 no start

Carl,

My '91 164L does the same thing when it gets hot. After driving my 164L
(auto), as it should be driven, sometimes the car does not restart.
When I first purchased the car, I freaked out. I too was stuck and had
no idea what to do and was thinking that AAA does not tow people from
where I was located!

Chip I had a problem with my 164 A/T not starting but it wasn't heat related
there's a
switch on the selector lever under the console that energizes a relay behind
the instrument cluster
that tells the car your in park. Do you hear a "clicking" when you wiggle
the lever in the park position? if so check this switch. The contacts tend
to become grooved and a good connection
is hard to maintain. I took some sand paper and smoothed them out and kept
adjusting the switch
position until there was no clicking while wiggling the lever and the car
starts. No more problems!

Hope this helps
