Man gets fistful of speeding tickets...

> RENO, Nev. (AP) ... An Illinois man testing the mettle of his
> new, high-speed car acquired a fistful of tickets on a
> cross-country trip that came to a temporary halt when his
> pricey ride petered out on Interstate 80.
>
> Chong Su Yi, 38, of Lombard, Ill., was arrested Wednesday in
> Elko after leading the Nevada Highway Patrol on a high-speed
> chase through Nevada's high desert.
>
> The souped-up Camaro used by the trooper was no match for
> Yi's 1999 canary-yellow Lotus.
>
> Not that the patrol cars are exactly sluggish.
>
> They can do about 160 mph, said Trooper Rocky Gonzalez.
> This guy was probably in the neighborhood of 180.
>
> But the NHP's advantage came when Yi's $92,000 vehicle ...
> brand new with only 3,450 miles on it ... began to billow white
> smoke.
>
> The motor probably wasn't broken in yet because he blew the
> engine, said Trooper Greg Johnson, who arrested Yi on charges
> of eluding police, speeding and reckless driving. That vehicle
> will do much faster than I could catch him. The speedometer
> goes to 220.
>
> It wasn't Yi's first ticket in Nevada that day.
>
> He had been written up two times earlier, once for going 113
> mph and another for doing 90, the NHP said. All three tickets
> were issued before noon along a 100-mile stretch of I-80.
>
> It turns out Yi, who was jailed briefly in Elko, collected
> quite a few speeding tickets as souvenirs during his odyssey,
> which began sometime in early April.
>
> Besides the three in Nevada, he received one ticket in Ohio
> on April 12; three in Iowa on the 16th; one in Nebraska on the
> 17th; and at least one in Wyoming on the 19th, the NHP said.
> Highway patrol officials in these states couldn't say Thursday
> whether he was slowed down by jail time along the way.
>
> Johnson said Yi indicated he owned a dry cleaning business
> in the Chicago area.
>
> He said he was going out to San Francisco to take in the
> scenery and then going back to the Chicago area, Johnson said.
> Specifically he said he wanted to see the Golden Gate Bridge.
>
> Yi was released from jail after posting bail and went to
> find a rental car, Johnson said.
>
> There are no Lotus dealers in Elko ... a small town about a
> 1-hour drive, at normal speeds, west of the Nevada-Utah line ...
> so Yi indicated he probably would have the car towed back to
> Salt Lake City, Johnson said.
