I just went through this a couple of weeks ago.  The slave cylinder even has 
different size bolt holes (mine was a Benditalia) that prevent putting the 
slave cylinder in with the nipple up.  Even if you could, the nipple would be 
on the inside, tight between the cylinder and the clutch housing.  Bleeding 
according to the Haynes manual (I used a pressure bleeder) initially resulted 
in a soft, but useable pedal. Had to use the full travel of the pedal.   
After driving for a day the pedal slowly resumes full authority.  I am 
assuming that the system self bleeds and any residual air kinda burps out as 
you use it.  This has been the way it has worked on 3 different occasions.
