How does the digest "work"

No Alfa content.. Just a question for the more e-mail oriented.

My question was how does the digest assemble and send out the messages?
Today, not 20 minutes after I posted to the digest, I got a response from a
member.  I did not get the actual digest with my post for some time after
that.  Also sometimes I see questions and responses in the same Digest..  This
puzzles me..
