adjusting intake cam with variable valve timing

Is there a "shade tree" way of loosing the cam from the variable valve
timing mechanism on my 82 Spider.  The shop manual has some specialized
holding tool to stop the cog from rotating.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
