Clutch and brake pedal pad?

Time to change the clutch and brake pedal pads on the Spider.  Trying to pry
the old off with a screw driver was not successful and damn near dangerous.
The rubber is hard and may need a box cutter procedure, again even more
dangerous than the first attempt.  I thought I would call on the collective
wisdom of the digest for a smarter / safer idea on the matter.  Thanks
