Me neither, but I think I know what's going on now.  At first I
suspected over-torquing, but another possibility came to mind.  The
D-shaped seals at the rear of the cover push up on the cover.  If you
tighten the center cover nuts first, you might crack it in the middle.
I've always run the back ones down all the way first to make sure the
D-seals get compressed before tightening the others. This prevents the
cover from getting overstressed in the middle. Are the people who have
cracked covers tightening the center nuts first, like they would do on
the head nuts?
