Kevin,

Those plates are mounting plates for the optional hardtop. They were not
optional, as the gaps (cracks)left in your spider attest, although the hardtop
was. I say this based on every spider of the era I ever saw, and at the time
(72-75) walked past a dealer every day for 3 years to and from school.
