i find this discussion interesting.

one thing that hasn't been mentioned, wasn't part of the fallout from the
audi fiasco that manufacturers were required to install brake interlocks on
the shifters, so that you couldn't shift out of park without pressing down
on the brake pedal?

wouldn't the mercedes in question have had that interlock?
