Cavitation will not only make the pump less eficient, it will also ruin a
pump over time.  Cavitation is the pump running away from the water. 
This is only temporary .
When this happens the water goes from a liquid to a gas.  When the water
vapor recondenses ,this process actually can wear the metal away from the
impelar of the pump.  This can lead to a less eficient pump, and
eventually failure.
