African rally Giulia drops to 9th OA

New Mexican and navigator John Smallwood, with rally driver Howard
Paterson in Smallwood's 1965 Giulia TI, have slipped to 9th place
overall at the mid-kilometer point of the FIA sanctioned Shield of
Africa Rally.
They were as high as 6th OA.
The daily bulletin from rally organizers (africanrally.com) after Day
8 said the Giulia is suffering "throttle problems, mushy brakes and a
slipping clutch," and that Paterson was slowed by back pain.
Leading Paterson and Smallwood are three 911s, three Ford Escorts, a
Ford Falcon and a BMW 2002 after 5,572 kilometers. The route that day
crossed farmland in Zimbabwe and now turns south to the start-finish
line in Cape Town. Each day usually consists of three timed stages in
different road conditions. There are a few rest days, but extensive
mechanical repairs are often needed at night.
Smallwood's rally exploits have been featured in the Alfa Owner and a
report by J. Michael Hemsley on the rally car displayed at the recent
national convention in Santa Fe can be found at <aroc-usa.org.>
