intermitent tach

About 2 years ago, the tach in my Milano started to read lower and lower - I
eventually started hitting the rev limiter at an indicated 5,200 rpm.
apparently Alfa received a batch of bad tachs, and this was a fairly well
known problem.  When I replaced it in '96, a new one cost $ 177.  The labor is
pretty strightforward.
