This checkbook mechanic needs help!

My beloved '91 Spider has an oil leak. Supposedly, it's the variable valve
timing unit. (One local mechanic's guess...I don't know of any Alfa
mechanic in my area.) The leak is coming from the front passenger side of
the engine, somewhere behind the belts.

Before I send her in to the shop this week, would someone please tell me if
the leak might actually be from the VVT unit, what the purpose of the VVT
is, what might cause it to leak, and how much longer I could reasonably
drive the car before I break something?

I'm embarassed by how basic these questions are, but I prefer to be an
informed customer. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Diane
