front cover studs

Subject: Re: Needing advice on replacing 115 front cover gaskets

.. Someone else could enlighten
me, but it appears that a loose front cover stud shouldn't cause a coolant
leak. Surely those outer studs don't penetrate the block into the water
jacket, do they? Never had one of those out so don't know. If its one of
the studs holding the water pump on then ... but .. life is never that
simple.... I"m going to grab an engine tomorrow (Saturday here) and a bare
block and check this out.

The fix: I would just pull the stud and replace it. Drill it, extract it
whatever - should be possible once the radiator is out. No way should the
ing that front cover off and back on properly is to remove the head,
remove the oil pan, and put everything back together with new gaskets and
seal, then spin around on the spot 3 times and say why didn't I just pull
the motor out? ! ! >>

Les, it's the main coolant gallery, that round projection running alongside the
block, (between cover studs 1 and 2), transfer holes are (ca 10mm) from this
into the liner jacket. The 1600 was a bit more complex casting around here.
the stud (6mm) is about 90mm long, it may come out, TIG-ing a bolt on the end
wouldn't be a bad approach. But not enough projection to get 2 nuts on, filing
flats might work, but as it has been leaking, the stud is possibly corroded, and
at 90x6mm, may well distort or break anyway.
One and a half hours (or so) to get the motor out, plus work that gets done
anyway, plus put the motore back in...only an hour or so to do the cover.
