As you noted, there is little (essentially none) difference in the
diameter, but the width will kill you. I wouldn't spend the money on the
215/50 unless someone on the list swore on a stack of bibles that they will
fit without the tire edges scraping the edges of the wheel wells on tight
turns.  The 205/50s really do need the 7 inch rims, otherwise the outside
edges will be curled up a bit, leaving you with a skinny tire patch and
real squirrelly handling.  So far, most reports indicate that 205/50 and
195/55-15s will fit without interference.
