[alfa] Test the team - answers

OK I will put you out of your misery.

Here are the questions I posted y'day, scroll down to see the answers.

1. Which famous motoring personality known as "IL Drake" died on August 14th
1988.
2. Which Formula 1 world champion took up the hobby of breeding budgerigars
after retirement.
3. Which Formula 1 world champoin was called "IL Grande Giovani" by his team
boss
4. Shelby Mustang GT350 - what is the significance of the 350?
5. What was the name of the first manufacturer to produce an automobile in
the USA.
6. Before becoming a racing team manager and car manufacturer Enzo Ferrari
was an aspiring racing driver. What was the make of the first automobile he
drove in competition and in what year.
7. What was Carroll Shelby's occupation before becoming a racing driver and
team owner.

1. Enzo Ferrari.

2. James Hunt Formula 1 World Champion in 1976.

3. John Surtess. Formula 1 World Campion of 1964 was called this by Enzo
Ferrari. Surtees holds the unique record of winning both the Motor Cycle
World Championship and the Formula 1 championship, no other person has
achieved this to date.

4. Not a simple answer, but here is what I have. The Shelby Mustang GT350
had a 289CID engine, not 350 CID, the power was 306HP, not 350, the length
wasn't 350 inches, in fact here isn't anything about the car suggesting 350 of
anything. Shelby when getting close to production desperately needed a catchy
name, the best he could come up with was that it was 350 paces from his office
to the production line! Anyway it was a whole hundred more than anything
Ferrari had with its new 250LMs and 250GTOs.

5. Quite a bit of controversy surrounding this one, and several law suits
at the time. The official answer is the Duryea Motor Corporation of
Springfield, Massachusetts in 1895. It had a 1 3/4 HP engine, 3 speed
transmission and an unsprung rear axle. It sold in large numbers for the
time.

6. Enzo Ferrari's first competition entry was driving a modified CMN on
November 23rd, 1919. CMN standing for Construzione Meccaniche Nazionale. His
second event was the Targa Florio 6 weeks later.

7. Would you believe - a chicken farmer!

And finally, another bit of motoring trivia from the UK.

When the revised Motor Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations came into
force in November, 1963 it became illegal to carry passengers on the roof of a
motor vehicle.
