George - I believe the logic behind the poor convertible top design was that 
Jag knew the Lucas electrics wouldn't work in the rain anyway.  Seemed 
little point in putting a lot of British "hardest-way" engineering into the 
top. BTW, my old Austin Healey 100 was the same way. The most pathetic 
excuse for a convertible top that I have ever seen. And don't start me on 
the utterly worthless heater.
