[alfa] early/late style syncros
Richard -
Don't worry about the internal syncro parts, they're identical.
Be sure to check the bushings (cheap) and bearings (not) for play/wear.
Check that the forks fit in the syncro sleeves with minimal slop.
On an old gearbox, the 2nd gear syncro dog will have lost some of its teeth,
and the rest will be bent in, which causes the groove on the ring and will
also hold the new ring away from the new syncro sleeve, meaning greatly
reduced syncro effect.
Replacing the syncro dog ain't easy, and they're not available new, so you
might try grinding off the sharp points on the inside of the teeth with your
dremel tool.
HTH,
Hans
