It can be gears/synchros, but it could be that new clutch. I had exactly this
problem on two virtually brand new cars, a Golf GTI and my Alfa 75. The
symptoms with the Golf were very specific. It would select 1st/2nd fine until
the unit got to working temp and then it just would not let you go there. VW
dealer didn't believe me til I left the car with them. A new clutch sorted it.
On the Alfa it was not heat dependent, but 1st/2nd became near impossible. A
new clutch sorted this one too. Both cars had less than 8000 miles on them
from new.

On an older car you have to make sure you havn't got a floating input shaft/
on the gearbox I suppose. Does it do it all the time or just when hot?
