RE: [alfa] Importing an ES30 - another possibility...



I used to know someone that apparently bought 4 GT40 reproductions from
the Uk to Australia that way. (He said he owned 4 at one stage, but I
only ever saw 2 of them). At the time, I knew nothing about GT40's, and
he told me that they were "Ford Development Cars".

The cars were completely dismantled, and shipped to Australia as parts
to his business (something along the lines of "Racing Car Developments"
to make it look legit). It wasn't until my mechanic told me he had worked
on one that I found out they were relatively poor replicas: Reverse mounted
Renault gearbox, brakes from a Morris Minor(!!!), a single 2 stage carb,
and of course, entirely fiberglass bodies.

Someone else told me that there was a series of identification plates going
around the UK a few years ago that were original Ford items. These were
subsequently placed on a lot of (good and bad) replicas, which is what this
guy I knew had.

For a "bad" replica though, his GT40's still looked pretty slick, and
getting
wheel spin in 4th gear was a somewhat fearsome yet exciting experience on
the South Eastern Freeway, just outside of Adelaide (Aus).

Back onto Alfa's though, I have heard of at least one person importing an
Alfa 33 16V Permanent 4 to Australia by dismantling and then reassembling
once it arrived. I am not sure how compliencing and registration would go
with this, but there must be ways...


If one were so inclined, it would seem that an enterprising individual could
remove the engine and transaxle from an ES30 and import the rolling chassis
as "car parts".  Then, import the engine and transaxle separately, again as
"car parts".   Reunite everything as a "kit car" and get it titled as such.

Insuring it would be quite a challenge, I'm sure...
