Thanks to all for the responses, even the ones pointing to the
non-existent pre-pump. I like Graham Davis' suggestion that I look to
the in-tank screen filter. Two years ago I took the tank out, drained
the syrup that had been gas at one time, then sent the tank out to be
cut open, cleaned out and sealed. At the time I put on new hoses, pump
and filter but did not change the in-tank screen filter. Instead, I
fiberglassed shut the two or three "windows" where the screen was torn,
assuming the remaining windows would provide plenty of fuel passage.
So, that would seem a good place to start (when I get the time).
