The facility was constructed for a revival of the Vanderbilt Cup and the first race was held in 1936. The course was critizied for being slow, and a significantly revised course was used in 1937. An oval track was used briefly. The Vanderbilt Cup revival had onlly limited success and the facility was converted to a harness track.
