The track was built on the site of the old Suffolk County Airport. The 1/5 mile paved oval opened on August 2nd, 1947 and operated until September 8th, 1984. A 1/8 mile paved dragstrip operated from June 9th, 1961 through sometime in 1962. The 1/5 mile paved figure 8 course opened on August 11th, 1962 and operated until the demise of the complex. At its peak, the track was prominently featured on ABC\'s Wide World of Sports.

The track was also sometimes referred to as Islip Stadium.
