From the mid 1960s through the 1980s, the Lake Afton Grand Prix National Races, held in August of each year, were a popular fixture on the Midwest Division SCCA calendar. Safety barriers consisted initially of hay bales and, later, hundreds of water-filled, 55-gallon drums and tire walls, which had to be set up and taken down each year. Increasing safety and insurance concerns, and the sheer labor of setting up and taking down the barriers (each of which took 4 to 6 weekends\' work by the members of the local SCCA Regions), led to its demise as a sports car track.
