Inyokern Dragstrip started operations on October 24th, 1954,
as part of an effort
by the local sheriff to move street racing to a safer venue.
The then-abandoned naval airstrip, Inyoken Aiport, was selected
as the site.
The dragstrip ceased operation at the end of 2005 when a local
ordinance was passed banning drag racing at airports.
